LEGENDARY Welsh singer and songwriter Dafydd Iwan says he is delighted one of his classic songs has been chosen as the name for a new fundraising group for Wrexham FC.

Yma o Hyd – which in English means We’re Still Here – is the title of one of Mr Iwan’s best loved songs.

Now it has been selected by a group of Wrexham fans who have set it up to help the football club financially.

Mr Iwan said: “I am really pleased, I feel quite chuffed about it. I’m in favour of fans getting involved with their football club.”

Plans are being drawn up which could see Mr Iwan appear at the Racecourse stadium for one of Wrexham’s home matches in October where he could sing Yma o Hyd down at pitch side before kick off.

“Nothing definite has been decided on that yet, but I would be happy to come to Wrexham if it could be arranged. I would probably sing with the record being played on the public address system.”

Mr Iwan said he might also take part in a fundraising concert for the new group, although nothing had been finalised at this stage.

The chairman of ‘Yma o Hyd’ is Wrexham fan Jamie Davies who said the aim of the group is to raise money for manager Dean Saunders to spend for the benefit of the club.

There will be a special launch held at the Railway Club, near Island Green, on Friday, October 28, starting at 7.30pm with a fancy dress theme.

Among the attractions will be raffles, auctions and music.

If anyone would like further details on the group they can log on to its Facebook page and also on the Wrexham fans’ website Red Passion.
