TESCO is set to open its doors in Gwersyllt.

Supermarket chiefs have confirmed they will be setting up shop at the site of the current Somerfield supermarket, which will cease trading at the site next month.

A host of new jobs also look set to be created at the new store.

A Tesco spokesman said: “I can confirm that we will be converting the store on Dodds Lane into a Tesco. The roles of all existing staff members will be safeguarded and new positions will also be created.

“However, I’m afraid that the development programme has not been finalised so we don’t have any further information at the present stage.

“This will be available within the next couple of weeks and we will also have a better gauge of the number of new jobs, as well as where the local recruitment centre will be.”

A spokesman for The Co-operative Group said: “We can confirm we have reached an agreement to sell the Somerfield store on Dodds Lane, Gwersyllt, to Tesco as a going concern.

“Members of staff at the store, 11 full-time and 20 part time, have been informed and all will transfer to the new operator with their terms and conditions of employment maintained.

“The last day of trading as The Co-operative Food will be October 6.

“We are pleased to have concluded a deal which ensures employment for the staff, as well as a continuing service for the community.

“We would like to thank our shoppers for their valued custom at Dodds Lane over the years. We are committed to providing a quality retail offering for the communities of North Wales and as well as looking at several new sites in the area, we are constantly reviewing our existing portfolio of stores.”
