A MAN found collapsed in Wrexham town centre early yesterday morning was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Police and an ambulance were called to Lord Street at 6.30am after reports that a man was lying on the pavement close to the former Woolworth’s store.

The man, who police have not named but say was middle aged, was taken by ambulance to Wrexham Maelor Hospital where his death was confirmed.

The area where he had been found was cordoned off by police but the street was re-opened to pedestrians later in the morning after police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “Our officers and an ambulance crew were called to Lord Street at 6.30am yesterday following reports there was a man lying on the pavement. He was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“The street was cordoned off while investigators examined the scene and it was re-opened later.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and the man’s family has been informed.”

The police spokesman said he could give no further details about the dead man.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We can confirm we did attend this incident with an ambulance crew, and they took the patient into Wrexham Maelor Hospital.”

Shop assistant Jean Foster, who had just started her shift at the Co-op food store a few hundred yards away in Lord Street, said: “A number of customers came in to say a man had been found in the street and that he was unconscious.

“We saw an ambulance go past with its blue lights flashing and stop further up the street.”
