Five crews battle huge barn blaze in Farndon

FIRE officers are investigating why a barn caught fire in the middle of the night.

Fire crews battled a blaze for several hours at Marsh House Farm, off Barton Road, Farndon, after fire broke out in a hay and straw barn early on Saturday.

Five fire engines, a high volume pump and an environmental unit were all used by crews to tackle a blaze which persisted for much of the day before being brought under control.

No injuries were sustained in the fire, which broke out at about 3.45am when straw went on fire.

Rita Dutton, who lives on the farm along with relatives who operate C. R. Dutton and Sons, described the fire as the worst she had seen in 40 years at the farm.

“It is awful what has happened here,” she said on Saturday morning.

“I have no idea at all what has caused this. The fire looks like it like it is going to be going all day.

“Thankfully nobody has been injured and the fire has been contained to just that one part of the farm.”

The fire did not spread to other areas of the farm, including houses and a yard containing a large number of caravans.

Cheshire and North Wales fire crews worked together to control the blaze. Fire investigators visited the scene as they sought to establish a cause.

Two sets of breathing apparatus, along with two hose reels, were used in tackling the fire.

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Five fire engines attended the incident from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

“The high volume pump from Congleton also attended the incident for water supplies. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service also sent its environmental unit to assist with the supply of water to the incident.”
