DESPITE being unable to use their ‘home’ pub for the past three months, sports teams based at the Red Dragon in Caia Park have been piling on the honours.

The Red Dragon, in Prince Charles Road, is the last remaining pub on the estate.

Earlier this year regulars fought a scheme to turn the building in to a rehabilitation centre for people suffering from brain injuries, which was eventually turned down by Wrexham planners.

Owners Admiral Taverns went ahead with plans to sell it off and the pub closed its doors in June.

But new owner, Chester solicitor Asif Saleem, told the Leader he plans to keep the building as a pub – possibly still called the Red Dragon – and is currently looking for a new tenant or manager.

This has delighted regulars and members of the various sports teams who are based there.

Since the closure they have been temporarily based at a number of other pubs in the town from where they have continued with their season’s competitions.

Kath Williams, who is assistant secretary of the Red Dragon’s Sunday football side, said: “All the teams have been doing well but are anxious to get back to our ‘home’ pub.

“The darts team, which has been based at the Swan in Penybryn, has just won the Maelor Hospital Charity League in its first season.

“The pool team, which has been playing its home matches at the Travellers Rest in Hightown, has won the second division title.

“And the football team, which now meets up at the Hand in Holt Road, is just about to start its new season.”

She added: “We would like to thank the landlords of all the other pubs they have been using for making us feel so welcome and we hope we will be soon be back at the Red Dragon for good.”
