A MEMORIAL fund has been set up to create a lasting legacy to a little boy from Flintshire who died in Africa.

Four-year-old Jamie Devaney, from Halkyn, tragically died last month after contracting a mystery illness.

His proud parents, Avril and Jim Devaney, have established the James (Jamie) Devaney Memorial Fund in his honour.

They wish to ensure Jamie’s life continues to benefit others, having touched so many people during his short life.

The fund will be used to develop mental health services and build a new mental health ward at Kisiizi Hospital in Uganda.

Jamie had travelled to the East African country with his mother to support his father, who was taking part in a charity bike ride to raise money for the hospital.

Avril and Jim paid tribute to their son in a moving message on the fund’s website:

“Jamie had a lovely sense of humour, way beyond his four years and a cheeky, endearing smile.

“He was exceptionally kind and gentle with everybody. His curiosity knew no bounds and he relished life and was looking forward to seeing more of what Africa held, including the lions, elephants and hippos.

“As his parents we know Jamie was perfect and we will always be glad we have such wonderful and precious memories of our time together as a family.”

All donations to the fund will be used in discussion with staff at Kisiizi Hospital. An initial target of £30,000 has been set and almost £2,000 was raised in the first 24 hours.

Jamie attended the playgroup at Ysgol Rhos Helyg and was due to start reception class next month.

A funeral, thanksgiving and celebration of Jamie’s life will take place today at St Mary’s Church, Halkyn at 11am. Family and friends have been asked to wear bright colours.
