POLITICIAN John Marek is looking to hand over a towering piece of Wrexham’s industrial heritage.

Dr Marek has been the proud owner of a chimney in Tuttle Street for more than 20 years when he saved it from planned demolition by its former brewery bosses.

However Dr Marek has decided to call time on his ownership of the historic tower, which was used in the brewing industry, and hand it over for free to a new generation.

He said: “Some 20 years ago I managed to reach an agreement with the then chairman of Marston’s.

“He proposed that the company should renovate the chimney and transfer ownership to me together with a sum of some £2,000,” said Dr Marek.

“There was one condition involved, under no circumstances did he wish to hear about the chimney again. I accepted and became the owner of a 120-foot high brick chimney, which was the last of its type in Wales. It was built in 1894 as part of the Soames Brewery, and closed in 1984 with the demise of Border.

“This is a fine piece of architecture – much more interesting than many modern examples – and is just about the only remaining evidence of Wrexham’s brewing past. I have looked after it for around 20 years but now I feel that the time is right for me to pass it on.”

Dr Marek said he would be willing to pay the legal fees involved in transferring ownership of the chimney and also stressed there was no need for applicants to have any specialised knowledge.

“It is something which is good to keep for Wrexham’s heritage, and is an important landmark in Tuttle Street,” Dr Marek added.
