HOLLYWOOD movie star Jonathan Pryce could become involved in a project to restore Bagillt Docks.

Delyn MP David Hanson is calling on the actor originally from Carmel, near Holywell, to act as a figurehead for the ongoing development of the site, which is being led by the Friends of Bagillt Foreshore group.

Mr Pryce’s father Isaac was a coal miner who worked at the nearby Bettisfield Colliery which utilised the dock for the transportation of coal.

Mr Hanson will contact the Pirates of the Caribbean, Evita and Tomorrow Never Dies star after a recent meeting with the group at the docks.

He said: “I will be writing to Mr Pryce telling him about the project and seeing if there are any ways he can become involved.

“I was delighted to meet with the Friends of Bagillt Foreshore to discuss a community inspired project to develop the area, bringing long-term wider benefits to the Flintshire economy.

“The group has already secured funding for a feasibility study and it was great to hear more about their plans for regeneration. It's a great imitative to increase the use of the foreshore by both local people and visitors."

A feasibility study is set to be carried out on plans to build a slipway and regenerate Bagillt Docks with the long-term goal to build a heritage centre and cafe at the site.

Bagillt councillor Mike Reece, also a member of the group, said: “We are still waiting on the feasibility study and we have got a firm to carry it out.

“This could be very beneficial for Bagillt. There are areas that will take a little bit longer to sort out with access rights but once it falls into place it will be very beneficial. It is shaping up to become a real focal point.”

Cllr Reece also thanked Mr Hanson and councillor Arnold Woolley, leader of Flintshire Council, for their support after recent visits to the site.

The group provides support to the restoration and maintenance of the Bagillt Foreshore from the Ladysmith Bridge to the end of footpath 77.
