WYNNSTAY administrators say they will honour money paid for wedding bookings.

It comes after the hotel in Wrexham, run by Stephanie Booth, went into administration, leaving many couples devastated fearing their big day was in tatters.

A spokesman for KPMG said they were also contacting all couples and trying to offer alternative arrangements where possible.

A spokesman for KPMG said: “In administration our obligations are quite simple and set out in legislation for the insolvency regime.”

But they added: “We understand this is a sensitive issue because it’s people’s wedding days. Hence we’ve tried really hard to find resolutions for what must be a very stressful situation.

“Unfortunately these are the casualties of a company going into administration. Our team has spent hours on the phone talking to couples and trying to find alternatives. I think we can all put ourselves in the shoes of these people.”

But the spokesman added if couples did not take up the alternatives offered, they would become ‘unsecured creditors’ who would be paid from whatever was recovered.

Unfortunately law dictates they would be paid only after secured creditors such as banks and HM Revenue and Customs. How much they would get in a refund depended on how much could be recovered, which was not yet known.

Elizabeth Williams and Ian Matthews say they were offered the Chainbridge Hotel as an alternative for their wedding celebrations, but were told they must pay more on top of the original Wynnstay price.

Elizabeth, 28, who is marrying her partner of three years, Ian, 25 on July 29, said she booked her wedding reception in January, but claims they were told by the Chainbridge they must pay £400 more because it is a more expensive venue.

The couple, from Pentre Broughton, are having the wedding service in Coedpoeth and said it would be a ‘nightmare’ trying to get all the friends and relatives out to Llangollen.

“If I have got to pay more for my wedding then I at least want it in a place I am happy with,” she said.

She decided to look elsewhere and has now booked Rossett Hall.

“Rossett Hall could not have been more helpful - they are honouring the price we paid at the Wynnstay, which not even Llangollen Hotels have done,” she said.

Johnathan Davies, of the management company who now cover the Chainbridge Hotel, said they were not involved with the Wynnstsay so could not comment on the couple’s situation.

“This is supposed to be the exciting bit, but it’s spoilt it all,” said Elizabeth, “People keep asking me ‘are you excited about your wedding?’ and I have to tell them I’m fed up to the back teeth with it, to be honest.”
