A LASTING memorial has been placed outside a pub where a much loved barmaid worked.

Barbara Melia, who was employed at the Corner Pin pub in Saltney for 30 years, died two years ago today from lung cancer at the age of 67.

Friends, family and colleagues have now joined forces to install a bench and patio area outside the pub in memory of Barbara.

Along with her husband, Terry, and two of her sisters, Ann Ellis and Jean Dougherty, Barbara ran the Saltney Junior Youth Club for 20 years and organised trips to Blackpool, summer holidays, discos and pool competitions.

She was also involved with the football team at Saltney Community Centre and would wash the kit every week and give support from the sidelines.

Terry said: “We would like to thank the Corner Pin committee and all the locals, including the owners of the pub, Lee and Donna Depuis, for their overwhelming support throughout this difficult time.”

Barbara, one of seven children, also worked with the elderly residents in Saltney and would rally together with her young grandchildren and family friends to perform Christmas carols every year at the Corner Pin for the senior citizens’ Christmas party.

She had three children: Karen, Kevin and Maria.

Corner Pin landlord Lee said: “We would like to say a very big thank you to the Corner Pin pub committee for donating the money to make this area look so nice and also a ‘thank you’ to the customers for their help and time helping to make it look so nice.”
