A DEDICATED ‘Red Army’ of Wrexham fans walked up a rain-swept Snowdon to raise cash for the supporters’ bid to buy the club.

About 200 fans tackled Wales’ highest peak aiming to raise a total of £20,000.

Organisers think they hit the target despite having to battle their way through gale-force winds and driving rain, which turned to hail as they got close to the summit.

The ‘Red Army’ started off from the Pen-Y-Pass car park at 10am, heading up the scenic Miners Track for a three-hour round trip of 13.5km to the top and back.

Among them was Bev Jones, who works in the Leader’s classified advertising department and has been a Wrexham FC season ticket holder for the past 22 years.

She said: “It was pretty awful, with the wind so strong it took your breath away and constant driving rain.

“As we got closer to the top the rain turned to hail.

“When we got to the cafe at the summit it was a case of wringing out your boots and then thinking about doing it all again to get back to the ground.

“It was bad but it was also great to see fellow Wrexham fans doing it too – there were red shirts everywhere.

“Everyone was saying well done to each other as they passed by.

“I have managed to raise about £200 and other fans raised similar amounts.

“I think we earned every penny.”

Spencer Harris, a Wrexham Supporters Trust board member who also took part in the trek, said: “Three coach loads of people and others who got there in their own cars.

“We were all soaked to the skin but are all very happy to have raised at least £20,000 in sponsorship money.

“This shows the passion there is for the club in Wrexham and North Wales.”
