A £300,000 flood alleviation scheme is set to get under way in Holywell.

Welsh Water will start work on the project in the Cross Roads area of the town on Monday.

The scheme aims to increase capacity on the local wastewater network, which will enable it to deal with larger volumes of stormwater during periods of heavy rainfall.

In the past properties in the area have been blighted by internal flooding during torrential rain and it is hoped the upgrades will help alleviate the risk of this happening in future.

The project, which is expected to be completed by the middle of September, will involve the construction of new manholes and the installation of 180 metres of associated pipework.

Jill Roberts, of Welsh Water, said: “We realise the distress internal wastewater flooding can cause and are committed to tackling it.

“Our project in Holywell reflects this and our goal is to provide customers with a first class service.

“We appreciate the inconvenience work such as this may cause but these measures are necessary to ensure the work is carried out safely.

“We will liaise with local residents before the scheme commences and keep them fully informed throughout.

“We would ask the local community to bear with us during these essential works.”

Cross Roads will be closed for the duration of the work, but pedestrian access will remain throughout and the utility company has vowed to maintain vehicular access for all residents, if it is safe to do so, while the work takes place.

Welsh Water has liaised with Flintshire Council and Environment Agency Wales during the project’s planning stages.
