FAMILY and friends of a man seriously injured after being knocked down have spoken of their shock following the incident.

Henry Coates, 22, from Llangollen, is believed to have been walking along the A5 at Glyndyfrdwy when the collision occurred early on Sunday morning.

Family members have continued to hold a bedside vigil at the specialist neurological unit at Liverpool’s Walton Centre, where he has been treated since being transferred from Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

His colleagues at the Llangollen Wharf heritage company where he works have told of their shock at the incident.

Mr Coates was described as “very well liked” by company director Steve Furniss and is said to be popular with colleagues and customers.

In a statement he added: “His work and good nature is key to what we stand for and what we do here.

"All our hearts go out to his family, we are all deeply upset.

“He is constantly in all our thoughts and wishes for him to come through this devastating accident."

Earlier this week a family member described Mr Coates as being in a stable condition and under sedation.

No update was released on his condition yesterday by the hospital at the request of the family.

A second pedestrian has been released from Wrexham Maelor Hospital after the collision, which led to the road being closed from 3am to 11.30am on Sunday.

The 18-year-old driver of a car involved in the incident was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol and was later released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Mr Coates is a former pupil of Ysgol Dinas Bran.

Governors’ chairman Elizabeth Pybus said earlier this week: “Everyone in the community is thinking of him and concerned for his recovery.

“I have known him and the family for many years and a more responsible young man you couldn’t wish to find.”

Anyone with information on the collision should call North Wales Police on 101 or 0845 6071002.
