A BOWLING green that has stood unused for a decade is set to be given a new lease of life thanks to a huge cash boost.

A grant of £100,000 is now on the way to Bradley Bowling Club from the Aggregates Levy company, which deals in awards to areas affected by former quarries, mines and similar industries.

The Bradley club green has not been used for 10 years, having been plagued by consistent vandalism.

Two years ago the club reformed but had to play all games away from home because its green was unplayable, but despite this the team still managed to win the Wrexham League last season.

With a promised £25,000 from Gwersyllt Community Council and a hope of gaining the short fall to the required £150,000 cost, from Wales Sports Lottery next season the club will start the balls rolling on a brand new all weather green which will be playable 365 days a year.

It will be the only green of its kind in the Wrexham area and one of a select few in the whole of North Wales.

Bradley Bowling Club chairman Ray Barnes led the task of raising the club and green backed by club members vice chairman Sam Roberts and secretary Louise Roberts.

Mr Barnes, a qualified bowls coach, said: “It is brilliant news and will revitalise the sport in the area and will also be available to wheelchair users because it is an all weather green.

“There are so many people to thank for what has happened.”
County and community councillors Ted George and David Griffiths also played a part.

Cllr George said: “We have, for a few years, looked at getting the area regenerated. The news about the club getting grant aid is both excellent and exciting.

“We will have an international standard Crown green. Being all weather , it will also mean that local schools and youngsters will be able to play on the new green

“The community council has been very supportive of the revival of the club. Members have played their parts in applying for grant aid and a big thanks must also go to Groundwork and Tom Middlehurst the former AM and chairman of Coed Talon Bowling Club who gave invaluable advice to the club’s financial grant applications. It has been a real team effort by everyone – with a fantastic result in the end”said Cllr George.

The green will be close to existing Sports Club premises and not far from the proposed new Welsh School.

Community councillors want the green area made more secure to prevent any further vandalism which almost proved fatal to the club a few years ago.
