DANNY WRIGHT is convinced he can fulfil his Football League dream at Wrexham.

Striker Wright became Dean Saunders’ third signing of the summer when he moved from Cambridge United on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old was a rare ray of light for the U’s last season as they struggled at the wrong end of the Conference Premier table, scoring 10 times in 45 appearances.

Wright made the switch to Cambridge from Histon, the club he finished third with during the 2008/09 season, in order to reach the Football League, but things turned stale and he jumped at the chance to join Wrexham.

The men from The Racecourse reached the play-offs last season before losing to Luton in the semi-finals, and Wright sees no reason why he and his new team mates can’t win promotion this time around.

“I want to play in the Football League,” he declared. “I think this club, with its ambition and drive is definitely ready to push itself back into League Two.

“I went to have a look around the training ground and The Racecourse with the gaffer and the facilities are second to none, they are like a Championship side and that was a big factor.

“The fact that they reached the play-offs last season also swayed my decision.

“The squad they had last season was very strong and I am confident that with the other signings the gaffer has made that we can challenge for promotion again.”

Last season heralded Wright’s first in full-time football – the Norfolk-born striker combining his job as a carpenter with playing for former team Histon.

By his own admission, Wright took a while to get used to life as a professional footballer, but he is fully prepared for the challenges at Wrexham.

“It took me a while to come to terms with being just a footballer,” he revealed. “For the first few weeks I would get in from training and just go straight to sleep until it was time to go and do it all again!

“It was hard on the body and at the end of the season it was even tougher because at Cambridge we were still scrapping to stay up.

“I managed to get used to everything and I feel like I started to show what I could do. I have played in the Conference for a while now and I know what is required and the type of players you come up against week in, week out.”

Wright is certainly the right build to succeed in the Conference, describing himself as “tall and a strong build”.

And while he is happy to take the responsibility that comes with being the archetypal targetman, he is quick to highlight other strengths to his game.

“I am happy to be described as a targetman because of my build, but I would like to think I am a bit quicker than the usual targetmen.

“There is definitely more to my game than just being a targetman, I will create chances for my team mates and hopefully I will score the goals that can help us win matches.

“I hope to show the fans what I am all about and continue to work hard. Goals are what strikers are judged on and I obviously hope to score my fair share.”

The move to Wrexham means that Wright will have to relocate from his base in Norfolk, but that is something he hopes can bring out the best in him.

“The move is taking me out of my comfort zone,” he admitted. “I am sure that it will help me focus on my football and I am looking to get settled as quickly as I can ahead of what will hopefully be a great season on the pitch.”

There will be at least one familiar face to help Arsenal fan Wright settle in the Wrexham area with Nat Knight-Percival already at The Racecourse.

The duo were team mates at Histon and Wright is looking forward to joining forces with Knight-Percival at the Reds.

“We got on very well at Histon and it will be good to see him again,” he said. “It is always nice to see a friendly face when you transfer to a different club.

“I met some of the players when I went to Wrexham to meet the gaffer and I am sure I will have no problems fitting in.”

Wrexham have announced another pre-seaon friendly with League One play-off finalists, Huddersfield Town the visitors to The Racecourse on Wednesday, July 13 (7.45pm).

Released midfielder Wes Baynes last night signed a deal with arch rivals Chester.
