VANDALS have attacked a village hall and a library threatened with closure.

Two large windows were smashed at Bagillt Library in the early hours of Saturday morning and a fence and plant pots were damaged at nearby community hall Beechcroft House.

Bagillt West councillor Mike Reece said: “The vandals threw bricks through two windows at the library. Luckily the librarian was working on Saturday and reported the damage.

“There was smashed glass everywhere. Library staff helped clear up the mess and it took about three hours.”

It is believed the attack happened after 1.30am.

Cllr Reece said: “No one in the village heard anything. This is mindless vandalism when most of the village knows we are in a fight to keep the library open.

“There is not much in the village as it is.”

A fence was ripped up and plant pots were smashed at Beechcroft House, which is used as a community facility by villagers, including toddler groups.

Cllr Reece has reported the incidents to North Wales Police and has urged residents with any information to contact them on the non-emergency number 101.

Lawrence Rawsthorne, head of culture and leisure at Flintshire Council, said: “Arrangements are in hand to have the windows repaired.

Bagillt Library was earmarked for closure by Flintshire Council along with the Garden City and Gwernymynydd libraries after cuts of £10 million were made in its 2011/12 budget.

But hopes have been raised that Bagillt Community Council may step in and help to keep it open.

Mr Rawstorne added: “Discussions with Bagillt Community Council regarding the future of the library are progressing well.”
