A YOUNG woman has died after a life saving operation was cancelled.

Cystic fibrosis sufferer Hannah Wilson, 20, was being prepared for a lung transplant operation when there was a problem with the donor lung and surgeons were forced to take the tragic decision to cancel the operation.

Hannah, of Bryn Isa Road, Brynteg, was born with cystic fibrosis and relied on two nebulisers, extensive physiotherapy to clear her lungs and more than 70 tablets a day.

She had already suffered a collapsed lung but successful treatment brought her through and in February she was added to the waiting list for a double lung transplant.

The day she had been waiting for arrived at the end of April when the family received a call saying a donor was available.

She was rushed from Broadgreen’s specialist Amanda Unit to Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, and prepared for surgery, when news came through about the problem with the donor lung.

Within a week Hannah suffered a second collapsed lung and died on Thursday, May 26 at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Broadgreen.

Paying tribute, her family say she had a real passion for life and believe it was her unique character and motivation which kept her going while suffering with a life-threatening disease, which has an average life expectancy of 30 years.

Julie Hallam, Hannah’s mother, said: “She was an amazing girl.

“She never moaned about her life or what she had to cope with and she was incredibly motivated.

“She always put others first – when we visited her in the hospital she would always ask how we were doing. She was so brave.”

Her grieving family spoke of Hannah with smiles on their faces as they remembered the remarkable young woman who dedicated her life to helping others.

Julie added: “She was a member of Deaf Stars in Connah’s Quay, a project leader for British Deaf Association Wales and as a member of the Assembly’s National Independent Advocacy Board she promoted advice line MEIC for children.
“She just wanted to give a voice to young people.

“I am so proud of Hannah and the many wonderful achievements she made in her 20 years and she has touched the hearts of many individuals.

“She never gave in and fought to the very end.
“I am humbled and honoured to have had her as a daughter.”

Hannah leaves mother Julie, stepfather Nick and brother Matty, 15, as well as grandmother Kathleen and ‘Gaga’ David, and her aunties and uncles Tracey and Darren, Barry and Paula and father Geraint Mills.

The funeral will be held at Wrexham Crematorium on Friday, June 10, at noon and Hannah requested that guests wear her favourite colour purple or the colours of the Welsh flag.
