A GIRL who was hit in the face with water balloons remains blind in one eye.

Nikita Charles, 18, was walking with her sister and brother through Cefn Mawr when two liquid-filled balloons were thrown from a passing car, hitting her in the face.

The incident happened more than two weeks ago, on Monday April 21, but Nikita’s mother Sue Charles, of Rhosymedre, says her daughter is still severely traumatised by what happened and is getting more upset as each day goes by without her sight returning.

Sue said: “Nikita can’t stop crying.

“She’s still so upset about what happened and she still cannot see out of her left eye.

“She had to go to the Maelor for a check-up on Thursday but there was no improvement and she will have to go back again in six weeks.”

Sue said that in the week of the incident she and her daughter spent every day at Wrexham Maelor Hospital where doctors carried out tests such as an MRI scan and prescribed Nikita with medication in a bid to strengthen her eye and block infection.

But the family was told that Nikita may not regain the sight in her left eye.

Sue said: “The doctors tried everything but nothing’s worked yet.

“We’re not going to give up hope but we just still can’t believe this has happened.”

According to Sue, Nikita and her sister Yasmin, 15, and brother Nathan, 22, were on their way to meet friends at the Ebenezer Cafe.

She said a car, believed to be a blue or grey R-registration Vauxhall Corsa, carrying three men in their early 20s, came towards the group from the direction of Rhosymedre and one of them threw the balloons.

She said Nikita was left with swelling, redness and a big lump on Nikita’s left eyelid and cheek.

Sue added: “I think the speed of the car increased the impact more than the men realised it would but they are grown men and should have had the courage to come forward by now.

“They’re just cowards and my daughter’s got to live with the emotional and physical damage they’ve caused.”

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “We are investigating the incident.”
