TWO teachers have been sacked and two teaching assistants disciplined after a lengthy investigation at a Wrexham school.

Emlyn R. Jones, chairman of governors at Hafod y Wern Community School in Caia Park, confirmed to the Leader that the action had been taken after a three-month probe into alleged incidents being captured on the school’s CCTV system.

Four staff were immediately suspended once the matter came to light. It is believed the headteacher, Simon Edwards, was not at the school on the day in question. He was on an educational course.

The school governors, following procedure, referred the matter to Wrexham Council education officials who set up an independent inquiry.

Following months of protracted meetings involving teaching unions a full report was supplied to the school governors who dismissed two teachers and disciplined two teaching assistants.

Mr Jones confirmed that two teachers had been dismissed and that two assistants had been subject to disciplinary action.

He said: “The matters referred to are still subject to appeal and, as such, I am not in a position to offer further comment.

“However, I am pleased to say the school continues to maintain the high standard of teaching and caring for its pupils as praised in the last report of the government inspectors.

“I pay a particular tribute to the leadership of the headteacher and to the commitment of the teachers and all who work hard to make Hafod y Wern School the success that it is.

“I know that the confidence of the governing body in the school is shared by the parents and the local community alike.”

When approached by the Leader, Wrexham Council managers said they were unable to comment.

John Davies, head of lifelong learning, children and young people service, said: “This is a personnel issue and as such we are unable to comment.”
