A YOUNGSTER’S trip to watch a Six Nations rugby game is being shown on television.

Five-year-old Dylan Menzies was filmed as part of Y Diwrnod Mawr which is a new documentary series about young children, telling the story of My Big Day.

The S4C series follows important days in the life of young children and rugby-mad Dylan stars in the 10-minute programme.

The programme follows Dylan, a pupil at Ysgol Gwernant, Llangollen, and his family on their way to Murrayfield for the Six Nations clash between Scotland and Wales in February.

Dylan’s mum is Wrexham GP Dr Llinos Menzies, whose Scottish husband Daniel is a consultant at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, in Bodelwyddan.

Llinos said: “He really enjoyed the filming.

“He was a little bit apprehensive at first and needed a bit of prompting but then he was always asking where his microphone was and if it was switched on.

“By the end he was speaking a lot more confidently.

“Dylan has been exposed to rugby all his life because of our interest in the sport.

“Dylan is actually Scottish since he was born in Dundee, but he thinks of himself as Welsh and always wears the red rugby shirt.

“He went to his first rugby match when he was three and a half and his little brother Osian was about 18 months.

“He enjoyed it enormously, it was a match at Cardiff and since then he’s been to see Wales play New Zealand and he’s been to Murrayfield.

“He genuinely loves the game and he plays rugby in the garden whenever he can.”
Dylan enjoyed the filming so much he’s been asking his parents when the crew are returning.

Llinos added: “The film crew were really good with us.

“When we were at Murrayfield we met up with half of Daniel’s family, uncles and grandparents, and we were not sure how they would react but the crew made it really enjoyable for everyone.

Producer Nia Ceidiog of Ceidiog Cyf said: “The programmes chart the lives of the children as they prepare for an event.

“We get to know the children as we follow them over a period of time.

“The series has been shot and edited the same way as we do any other documentary with the story told from each child’s perspective and in their own words.”

Siân Eirian, head of S4C’s children’s services said: “This original and innovative new series offers a fascinating insight into the lives of youngsters across Wales.

“It captures a range of magical moments and is a popular part of the Cyw service.

“I would love to hear from parents of pre-school children with stories about their big day so we can include them on Cyw’s website – www.s4c.co.uk/ cyw.”

Dylan appears in the programme on S4C on May 23 at 7.50am.
