A FAMILY of four had a narrow escape when a fire broke out in the roof space of their home.

Firefighters from Wrexham were called to the blaze in the four-bedroom property in Orchard Gardens, Acton, just after 5am on Saturday.

Resident Dave Green told how he was alerted to the fire and led his wife and two children to safety.

He said: “We were all asleep at the time and I was woken up by a noise outside our bedroom.

“At first I thought it was a burglar but when I went out on to the landing I saw a glow coming from the trap door in to the loft.

“I got up there, I slightly opened the door and then I was as horrified to see the flames.

“It was well alight so I shouted to my wife, Laticia, to get herself and our two sons, Tom, who is 18, and Oliver, 14, out of the house as quickly as possible.

"They all got out through the front door. We also got our two dogs, Tilly the bulldog, and Evee, who is a miniature schnauser, out of the house.”

He added: “The roof space of the house was badly damaged by fire and there is smoke damage to the bedrooms but the main thing is that we all got out safely.

“The smoke detector operated as soon as I opened the door to the loft.
“There is a lot of mess to clean up.”

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to a report of a house fire in Orchard Gardens at 5.08am.

“We had two crews from Wrexham plus an aerial ladder.

“When we arrived we found a fire in the roof space.

“There is about 90 per cent damage to that area and smoke damage to the rest of the house.

“The smoke detector operated.

“We are now investigating the cause of the fire and, as we usually do in these cases, are giving fire safety advice to other homes nearby.”
