LEGENDARY prince Dafydd ap Llywelyn is being brought to life in a brand new book.

Proud Welshman Steve Griffiths has chronicled the life and times of the Bagillt-born prince in Dafydd ap Llywelyn: The Shield of Wales to educate the masses of his importance.

The amateur historian, 45, from Hawarden, has campaigned tirelessly to keep the spirit of Welsh history alive.

His admiration is so great that he spearheaded a campaign to erect a plaque commemorating the birth of the prince, otherwise known as Prince Dafydd the Second of Gwynedd and Wales, in Bagillt which was unveiled last year.

The book features more than 60 photographs of historic locations, genealogical tables and battle maps which resurrect a forgotten era of Welsh medieval history.

Steve said: “I have been into Welsh history for a long time.

“I think Prince Dafydd should be up there with other notable characters in Flintshire such as Gladstone and Daniel Owen.

“He isn’t known as much as them, but he should be – he’s Welsh royalty and I want to get his story out there.”

Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant hailed the book as “fascinating” after he reviewed it.

He said it was “a pleasurable read that delivers a fascinating insight into one of our region’s historical figures. Illuminating refreshing and an education to all”.

Steve, who has lectured at many history-themed events across the country, is fresh from a month-long exhibition at Buckley Library chronicling the history of the Welsh princes. He has also voluntarily donated a series of handmade replica heraldic shields of the Welsh princes to schools, churches and visitor centres in Flintshire.
