THE magic of Hollywood is coming to Deeside.

A new community cinema has been set up at Connah’s Quay Civic Hall in a bid to keep young people off the streets and bring a lost asset back to the town.

The former Hippodrome cinema, on Connah’s Quay High Street, closed in May 1962 marking the end of the big screen for residents.

But town councillors hope the new cinema will breathe fresh life into youth activities and rekindle the flames of the shared enjoyment of film.

Cinema-goers will be treated to the sci-fi blockbuster Tron in which the son of a missing virtual designer ends up inside the digital world that his father designed.

Town council clerk Ian Jones said: “As a town council we are delighted to be able to re-launch our community cinema project and subject to demand and its success we are hoping to arrange further screenings in the future.

“Many years ago towns and villages often had their local picture houses with names like The Palace and The Hippodrome and Connah's Quay was no different.

“However their decline has left a vacuum for such local screening events and town councillors would like to encourage local people to support the re-launch.

“We may also able to help arrange special screening events for local clubs, schools and organisations who have a specific area of interest or particular film in mind.”

Tron will be screened on Friday, April 8 at 7pm.

For tickets priced at £3 each, go to the Quay Building on Fron Road or call Connah’s Quay Town Council on 01244 819420.
