IT IS the most talked about wedding of the year – and one artist from the region is doing his bit to commemorate it.

Grant Purcell has channelled his creative energies into a portrait of Prince William and Kate Middleton, who will tie the knot at Westminster Abbey on April 29.

The 37-year-old, of Palmer Street, Wrexham, has received widespread praise for his work from those who have seen it.

He hopes the painting could even attract interest on an international scale and says he would love to present the finished piece to the Royal couple.

Grant said: “This is something I have felt inspired to carry out and I am really pleased with the way things have been going.

“I am coming close to the end now. I have been filmed throughout the entire process and the recording should be going on to YouTube shortly.

“The whole campaign is an attempt to get my work possible worldwide recognition.

“My ambition is to present the couple with their first painted portrait together.”

Grant has been in contact with a TV company about his work and says he has received potential interest from programme bosses.

He has studied a number of photographs of William and Kate for the portrait, which is his first foray into combining acrylics with watercolours.

He said: “My artwork is basically untrained and I graduated with a degree in creative writing and drama three years ago.

“I will possibly do an MA in September at Chester University, depending on how successful this campaign proves to be.

“My writing has certainly taken priority over my artwork in recent years, but hopefully now is a chance to make up for it.

“People who have seen the painting say that they are very impressed.”

Grant hopes to sell prints of the portrait and promote his portfolio.
