FLINTSHIRE did its bit for Comic Relief with a day of red-nosed fun.

A host of activities were held though the county on Friday at schools, workplaces and special events.

Ryan Corbett, 16, of Shotton, turned his hobby into cash as he and nine friends spent 24 hours skating around Deeside Leisure Centre’s ice rink.

They finished their marathon effort at 7.30pm on Friday night.

Ryan said: “I have been ice skating for five years and it is the toughest thing I have done.

“It was quite hard at the end. Our feet started to hurt and we wanted our beds!”

But he added: “We raised more than £1,000 and we are really proud.”

Mold Alun pupil Ryan, along with skaters from Hawarden and Connah’s Quay, took turns on the ice with no fewer than four skaters on the rink at any one time.

Katherine Furlong, of Connah’s Quay, raised more than £190 by having her head shaved.

The 23-year-old set herself a challenge of taking on three fundraising events this year, starting with her grade three cut.

Katherine, who has the full support of her bosses at Halfords in Chester, said: “Passion 4 Hair did this free of charge for me.

“They were incredibly welcoming, friendly and supportive.

“It’s an unusual way to raise funds. I’d like to thank everyone who sponsored and supported me.”

Basix Wrestling held a special fundraising event at Deeside Naval Club in Connah’s Quay.

As well as donations, money was raised as youngsters paid for a chance to arm wrestle with one of the contestants.

Schools across Flintshire also raised funds for the appeal, including pupils at Ysgol Estyn in Hope who went to school in their pyjamas.

Headteacher Gareth Jones said: “We had a whole school cake sale as well and so far we have raised £420.

“We have two more cake sales this week and we hope to top £500.”

Ysgol Bryn Gwalia held a talent competition and pupils dressed up as part of a Tramps or Tiaras day, helping to raise more than £270.
