IT WAS a resounding yes from residents of Wrexham and Flintshire in the Welsh referendum.

All but one authority in Wales carried the yes vote on giving the Welsh Assembly greater law making powers, with Monmouthshire the only county where voters decided not to back change.

In Flintshire 21,119 voted yes with the no vote coming in at 12,913. The turnout was 29.4 per cent.

Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn and Deeside had supported the yes campaign and said he was delighted with the outcome.

He said: “I was at the count. This was a good result for the people of Wales. The legislation that will be taken through the Assembly will be able to be delivered more quickly, more efficiently and more effectively.”

In Wrexham 27,469 people turned out to vote, of that, 17,606 voted yes and 9,863 voted no.

Turnout across Wrexham county borough was 27 per cent.

Reacting to the anouncement at the Glyndwr University sports hall, Assembly
Member Lesley Griffiths said: “I’m delighted we have had the yes vote in Wrexham.

“It is a 20 per cent swing since the last referendum.

“The ‘yes campaign’ has worked really hard to get the message out.

“Now it means that the laws made for Wales will be made in Wales which will be more effective.”

Clwyd South MP Susan Elan Jones, also on the side of the ‘yes campaign’, said:

“More than 64 per cent said yes which is a terrific result.

“We are seeing a younger generation of people who are more relaxed about devolution.”

Plaid Cymru Cllr Marc Jones said: “It’s a fantastic result for Wrexham which has moved on since the last referendum.

“It is a real vote of confidence - people are feeling more confident in our nation.”
Liberal Democrat Cllr Phil Wynn was part of the ‘no campaign’ and said he was disappointed with the result.

He said: “The yes/ no campaign has been like a David and Golaith fight because the ‘yes campaign’ has had four political party groups behind them.

“With the low turnouts I hope the politicians don’t take this as a ringing endorsement of devolution and how they should run this country.”
