HAVE-A-GO heroes stepped in after an alleged assault at Wrexham General Station.

A fight broke out as youths boarded the train at platform four of Wrexham station shortly after 10pm on Wednesday.

British Transport Police spokesman Brian Price said a group of youths got on the train which had come from Wrexham Central and was due to go to Bidston, Wirral.

Passengers witnessed an alleged assault against an 18-year-old man. A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault and later charged.

He was bailed to appear at Flintshire Magistrates Court on Tuesday, March 16.

Passenger Stacey Louise Oxton, a recruitment consultant from Penyffordd, near Mold, helped to restrain one man until police arrived.

The 19-year-old said: “I’m not a hero at all. I just did what I could to help the situation.

“There was an elderly couple and quite a few young kids on the train and I was just worried about them.

“I did what I had to do to keep him away from them.

“I tried to keep my distance at first because it wasn’t my place to get involved but when things started to get worse and no-one else was stepping in I thought I had to do something.

It was an absolute nightmare and really quite scary.”

An Arriva Trains Wales spokesman said: “The incident happened on the 21.57 service from Wrexham Central to Bidston.

“The train had to stop at Wrexham General and all passengers were provided with alternative road transport.

“The safety of our passengers is paramount and we do contract private security staff, in the evenings and at weekends, who have the power to issue notices for the breaking of railway byelaws.

“We also operate a joint partnership between Arriva, the British Transport Police and the Welsh Assembly Government to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and all trains and most stations operate CCTV.”

British Transport Police have launched a witness appeal following the incident.
Mr Price added: “Enquiries, including viewing CCTV from the station, are ongoing.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not already spoken to police is asked to contact British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident number 660 of 02/03/2011.
