THE FATHER of a teenager who died of testicular cancer is holding a charity darts match in his memory.

Ryan Phillips, of Glyn Ceiriog, died in October following a 14-month battle against the disease.

Now Ryan’s dad Meirion is organising a charity darts match at the Stanton House Inn, Chirk, on March 19.

He also wants to raise awareness of testicular cancer and urges anyone with health concerns to go to the doctor and get it checked out.

Speaking about Ryan, who was just 18, Meirion said: “He went to the doctors and they said it was a cyst and to come back but he didn’t go back straight away.

“There are two types of testicular cancer and Ryan had the rarest one so he didn’t stand much of a chance against it.

“It is an awkward age because 18-year-olds are embarrassed by it all and you take your health for granted.

“It is important for them to check themselves – at the end of the day the most important thing is going to the doctors – not your red face.

“Better to get yourself checked and have peace of mind.”

Ryan, who was a former pupil of Ysgol Dinas Bran, also left mum Carol and sister, 13-year-old Emma.

Speaking after his death his family paid tribute to a “perfect son” who was a real fighter.

Mrs Phillips said at the time: “I don’t think he really accepted it was terminal because he never gave in, he kept fighting.”

Mr Phillips said: “We could not have wished for a better son, but it makes it harder that he has gone.”

At Ryan’s funeral more than £1,300 was raised for the Young Oncology Unit at Christie Hospital, Manchester, where he had most of his treatment.

A memorial was also held for Ryan in November.

Mr Phillips hopes to continue fundraising for the same cause and hopes the charity darts match will bring in another £1,000.

The event is £5 to enter and you can turn up on the day, which starts at 1pm.
