A FAMILY run business that has served the community for more than 50 years is moving to a new site.

Alf Jones Cycles, which opened in 1955, is still enjoying growing success.

The family firm was passed down through the generations to Andrew Castle in the 1980s when his grandfather Alf retired at the age of 70.

Now, thanks to its growing popularity, Andrew is delighted to announce the business is moving to a bigger and better site on Chester Road, Gresford.

He said: “Our cycle shop is one of the oldest businesses in Wrexham and it’s great that we’re bringing in more custom than ever before, even after all this time.

“We’ve moved around a lot over the years so everyone knows us, but this new site is brilliant.

“The shop’s 6,000 sq ft, has a nice big car park and we’re even running our own coffee shop.

“We’ve also got a couple of penny farthings and other memorabilia from my grandfather’s day, on display.”

Andrew is looking forward to getting his hands on a hobby horse, a wooden and metal creation which was one of the first means of transport to use the two wheel design back in the 1800s, and it will take pride of place in the new shop.

He said: “We’re a local business employing local people and it’s great that we still get so much support.

“People come from all over to see us because of places like Llandegla Forest, one of the best centres for mountain biking in the country, and it’s part run by one of our old boys, James Gaffney, who used to work for us when he was 14 or 15.”

Andrew paid tribute to the hard work and expertise of all his staff in making the business a success.

He said: “They’ve got superb knowledge, they’re just fantastic.

“And I guess they must like it here because they always stick around for the long term. I love it myself, I don’t think I’ve ever got out of bed and not wanted to go to work.”
