A LAWYER is raising money to help find a cure for an extremely rare condition which affects her twin nephews.

Criminal law solicitor Emma Simoes, 26, said her families’ world was turned upside down last month when two-year-old twins Zach and Ruben Wheeler were diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder.

Ataxia Telengiectasia affects different parts of the body, especially movement and balance, and causes severe disability in children and premature death.

Emma, who works for Allington Hughes solicitors on Grosvenor Road, Wrexham, said she wanted to raise as much money as possible for the Ataxia Telengiectasia (A-T) Society so that they can carry out research into the condition.

According to the society, the condition is so rare it only affects about three people per million in the UK.

Emma will be running a 10K race in London in July and has also organised various fundraising events, including charity bucket collections at local supermarkets and raffles.

Speaking about A-T, Emma said: “My families’ world was turned upside down when my beautiful and cheeky two-year-old nephews, Zach and Ruben were diagnosed with A-T.

“I had never heard of this condition and was speechless when I found out the hard facts about my nephews’ future.

“Although emotions are running high my family are trying to remain positive.

“The A-T society is a small national charity and they have provided my family and I with invaluable support.

“Their ultimate aim is to find a cure for A-T and any money donated is used to fund the best possible research.

“The rarity of the condition means they do not enjoy widespread appeal but the needs of the children affected are great.

“This is why we need your help. All your donations, however big or small will make a huge difference.

“Research is advancing in the field of genetics and A-T and with your help, we know a cure will be found.”

Emma, who lives in Rhosddu, added that she had been overwhelmed with the kindness and support shown by several local businesses in her fundraising effort.

Her employers have also agreed to raise money for the A-T Society this year and Emma’s close friend from Regent House of Flowers is also helping out by taking donations at the shop and holding a fundraising event there.
