PUBS and clubs in Wrexham town centre have been asked to try to keep the noise down during a live radio show on Friday evening.

Around 400 tickets have been sold for the broadcast of popular BBC Radio 4 current affairs programme Any Questions from St Giles’ Parish Church, presented by Jonathan Dimbleby.

In a bid to keep the area as quiet as possible during the hour that the programme is on air, Wrexham town centre project officer Colin Jones has been out and about distributing leaflets, requesting that pubs and clubs keep the noise they make to a minimum.

He said: “The leaflets were just reminding them that this will be a live broadcast.

“In particular I was requesting those places which usually drop their empty bottles into large skips behind their premises not to do this between 8pm and 9pm.”

Mr Jones said the leaflet was not sent out because extra noise was expected to be generated during the Wales v England Six Nations rugby match, which also kicks off at 8pm.

He explained: “Obviously, I couldn’t tell the pubs and clubs to keep quiet, I was just asking for their co-operation.”

Alex Jones, who owns the Bank Wine Bar and Bistro on High Street, near to the church, said: “I don’t think it’s going to cause any major issue.

“We don’t normally empty our bottle bins until late at night anyway.

“We should be proud that something like this is coming to Wrexham and we should all work together to support it.

“It’s advertising for the town.”

- On the panel of guests for Any Questions will be Helen-Mary Jones, Plaid Cymru assembly member and health spokesman, Jesse Norman, Conservative MP, Peter Hain, Shadow Welsh Secretary, and the writer James Delingpole.

They will debate a list of topical questions with contributions from members of the audience.

The warm-up debate starts at 7.30pm with live recording starting at precisely 8.02pm.
