A GPs’ surgery needs to move premises to meet the demands of the community it serves, say staff.

The new proposed site for Borras Park Surgery would be off Rhosnesni Lane, but fears have been raised about the development taking up land on the area known locally as the Spider Park.

A joint statement has been made by Borras Park Surgery’s senior partner Helen Wood and practice manager Debbie Pardoe highlighting the need to move.

They say: “For those of you who have visited our surgery, you will be acutely aware of the state of the building. We have outgrown the current premises so much that we have had to install a portable cabin as a separate building on site.

“We are concerned we will struggle to offer the range of services expected of a modern GP practice if we remain where we are – ultimately to the detriment of the health of the local population.

“In addition, the parking provision is particularly poor and we are concerned being located between the schools is a dangerous situation.”

Dr Wood and Mrs Pardoe say the surgery, which is situated on Borras Park Road, is dedicated to providing the best range of primary care services possible to patients. But without new purpose built premises it will not be able to offer what is needed.

With its development partner GPIC Limited, the surgery has been looking at a number of sites throughout Borras since 2007, but without success.

The statement continues: “The current proposal for the land off Rhosnesni Lane is, we feel, the solution that enables us to provide the correct service we want to give.

“Unfortunately this has clearly caused an amount of controversy. It is not our intention to cause such divisiveness and we regret the fact it has done so. Our simple aim is to provide a better health service for our patients.

“We would emphasise the draft proposal has been designed sympathetically so as not only to retain the football pitches but to re-align them so that they are more efficient and also to re-provide new changing facilities to replace the current derelict hut.

“The building will be mainly single storey and the car park will be available for the users of the football pitches at weekends.

“Nevertheless, the fact remains that we require a new purpose built premises which will enable us to develop and provide a quality health provision for our patients for the next 20 years all within the parameters set by the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) as soon as possible to ensure the continued health care provision of our patients in Borras and Acton.”

The surgery says that in 2004 WAG committed itself to improving health services throughout Wales. The first step was to upgrade the primary care estate and healthcare provision for the communities they serve.

They add: “The aim of this is to improve the range and quality of services being provided by GPs and the ease of access to these, by passing traditional hospital-based services into the community via GPs. The result being care closer to home, within the community, to the benefit of all patients in the neighbourhood.

“In line with this policy each local health board was required to produce a strategy identifying priority premises for development, the criteria being those that were both functionally and physically obsolete and did not comply with the latest clinical guidance and legislation.

“In Wrexham, Borras Park Surgery was identified as a priority. In 2007 the local health board and Borras surgery, following a public procurement exercise, appointed a preferred developer to assist in procuring new premises.”

A planning application has not yet been submitted to Wrexham Council, but the developers plan to submit the application once the authority decides whether the land is suitable for the development.
