RAM raiders smashed into the front of a newsagent’s in the second attack on the shop in three months.

A car was driven into the front of Martin’s newsagents on Borras Park Road, Wrexham, at about 10.50pm on Thursday.

But the raiders had to flee on foot after the car failed to start after the bungled raid.
Insp Alex Goss said: “We believe a vehicle was used to try to gain access to the premises and rammed into the metal shutters.

“At this stage we do not think property was stolen.”

Insp Goss said he believed the vehicle would not start following the crash and a suspect escaped on foot.

“The police helicopter found somebody nearby hiding in a bush,” he said.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and burglary of a non-dwelling.

He was questioned by police on Friday morning.

Last November raiders broke into the same shop through the roof and tried to steal money from the ATM.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to this latest incident, and anybody who can help should call North Wales Police on 0845 607 1002 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.

Shop owner Janet Stanton was left clearing up the mess and had to close on Friday and Saturday while repairs were made.

“It’s just one of those things really,” she told the Leader.

“It is a bit of a mess but we have a crew of people in taking the front of the shop out and securing it.

“We’re not completely finished yet. It will take a few days until everything is back to normal.”
