FALLEN Flintshire soldiers are to be honoured at a memorial concert.

Lance Corporal Alan Cochran, 23, of Pentre Halkyn, and senior aircraftsman Peter McFerran, 24, of Connah’s Quay, will be remembered at a music concert at St Asaph Cathedral.

Buckley businessman Esmor Davies has taken on the mammoth task of organising the event, which will be a local version of a concert he hosted in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, in September,

The tireless fundraiser said the Wooton Bassett concert had been held to thank people there who lined the streets in silence to pay tribute to soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He said: “We should be grateful to the amazing people of Wootton Bassett for the time they have spent in all weather lining the streets and showing their support. They truly are a credit to their country.”

L/Cpl Cochran was killed in Afghanistan in June and Senior Aircraftsman McFerran was killed during a motor attack in Iraq in 2007.

The Flintshire concert will feature performances from the North Wales Mixed Choir, classical pianist Annette Parry and singers Aled Wyn Davies, Ann Atkinson and Elin Mai. Thirteen-year-old singing sensation Lucy Kelly, from Anglesey, will also sing the Welsh hymn, Calon Lan, because it was a favourite of Aircraftsman McFerran.

Esmor, who heads his own construction business, has raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years.

In 2002, he carried out £70,000 worth of adaptations to the home of engineer Ian Hunt, from Buckley, who was left paralysed after a motorcycle accident, and earlier this month he hosted a monumental party for 100 children with special needs in Sychdyn. The 65-year-old takes his inspiration from his mother Morfydd Davies, who taught at Sunday school in Ruthin for 50 years.

“I don’t believe in just giving money to a charity,” said Esmor.

“I like a project to get my teeth into and something that will bring happiness to lots of people and raise money at the same time.

“Some people have hobbies like golfing and darts, but I don’t like any sports.

“With this you come home knowing that you have done something good.

“In life you have to think of those less fortunate than yourself. My mother was exactly the same.

“I’m just working and living through her really.”

Esmor, supported by wife, Irene, and daughter, Christine, wants to raise £5,000 from the concert.

Proceeds will be split between Help the Heroes and Headley Court Military Hospital in Surrey.

- The concert will be held at St Asaph Cathedral on Saturday, February 12, at 7pm. Tickets, at £13 each, available  on 01244 541791.

A DVD of the concert held in Wootton Basset will also available for a small donation.
