A MAN died on a busy main road after being hit by a car.

North West Ambulance Service confirmed a male pedestrian was killed in what is believed to be an accident involving a BMW at about 5.30am on Friday near the roundabout at Vicars Cross, Chester, on the A55 Wales-bound carriageway.

The man, who died from his injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the pedestrian, whose name has not been released, was in his 20s and from Connah’s Quay. Next of kin have been informed.

The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man from Chester, was uninjured.

Rush-hour traffic across Chester and approaching the North Wales border was brought to a standstill by the incident.

Commuters faced hour-long delays as vehicles became backed up on the A55 in Chester and on to the M53.

The west-bound carriageway of the A55 southerly by-pass was closed between Vicars Cross and Boughton Heath until lunchtime on Friday while an accident investigation took place.

North Wales Police are now appealing for witnesses to the collision.

Anyone with information should call the Roads Policing Unit at Chester on 0845 458 0000.

- A DRIVER was cut out of his car after a smash on Friday morning.

The 42-year-old man was taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital with minor injuries after his car overturned on London Road, Trelawnyd, near the Crown Inn just before 9am.

Pub landlord Marcus Farrington said: “The road was blocked for about an hour. The driver had hit one of the walls of the houses and the car ended up on its side.”

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue said: “We used cutting equipment to release a man from the car through the roof.”
