BURST pipes are continuing to cause significant disruption at the region’s schools.

Although most of those affected by flooding remain open, a number have had to close sections due to the extent of the damage.

One badly affected school is Sandycroft Primary School, which has temporarily closed its infant and nursery sections after significant flooding in the years one and two and early years departments.

About 100 children are currently unable to attend the school after it suffered its third and most significant burst pipe of the freezing winter on December 21.

Headteacher Andrew Liptrot said: “The damage caused by the flooding was incredible and a nightmare for us.

“We are doing as much as possible to get the school fully operational quickly. Lots of staff have been in over Christmas and are assisting workmen.

“I admire the efforts they are making, getting on their hands and knees for the good of the school.”

Should the work be completed on schedule, years one and two will return on Thursday, January 13.

Reception classes are due to resume on January 17, with a provisional date of January 24 set for the nursery reopening.

Ysgol Y Llan Primary in Whitford suffered a flood in the year three and four classroom at Christmas.

Pupils from the class have not been in school this week, but work has been set for them to complete from home.

They are due to return on Monday for classes in other areas.

Headteacher Kath Royles said: “It has been a big clean-up operation but it has been made easier by so many people offering to help out.

“I would like to say a big thank you to parents, governors and staff for all their offers of help.”

St Mary’s Catholic School, Flint, was also badly hit by flooding damage shortly before Christmas.

About 90 members of the nursery and reception classes face an indefinite wait before work is completed on affected classrooms.

A spokeswoman said: “We are sending a letter out to parents to keep them informed.

“We are doing everything possible to get the school fully up and running and would like to thank everyone for their help and understanding.”

At lunchtimes pupils must go to St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School as St Mary’s canteen is currently closed.
