CALLS have been made for a landmark civic centre to be protected.

With plans for replacing County Hall, Mold, at an early stage, a request has been made to heritage organisation Cadw to save the building.

New £20million headquarters for Flintshire Council are on a “wish list” of capital projects but assurances have been given no decision will be made on the project without further discussion due to uncertainty surrounding future council spending.

Saltney Mold Junction councillor Klaus Armstrong-Braun has contacted Cadw asking for the building to be listed because of its “classical” design.

He said: “I have spoken to people who have visited for the first time and they have said it is a lovely building. There are some buildings you never get fond of and others you like. I never get tired of looking at it.

“It is a building in a classic style. There is nothing else like it anywhere in Britain and I hope it can be listed.”

Cllr Armstrong-Braun said he would be concerned about the cost of demolishing the building or of securing it after it fell out of use.

Flintshire Council’s chief executive Colin Everett said County Hall had become dated and was expensive to run.

A Cadw spokesman said Cllr Armstrong-Braun had been in touch about County Hall and that it would be part of a general Wales-wide survey of sites.

He said: “Cadw has plans to undertake thematic surveys of a range of post-Second World War buildings, including civic architecture.

“Individual buildings are assessed for listing only where they are under immediate threat.”
