THE EAGERLY anticipated Year of Culture is scheduled to launch with a spectacular parade in the new year.

The Light Fantastic Carnival will bring schools, dance groups and majorettes together with local businesses and the council, as the community comes out in force to showcase the town’s heritage.

The amazing event will mark the formal start of the eagerly anticipated Year of Culture which will celebrate the town’s unique identity.

Bethan Richards, Year of Culture team member, is looking forward to 2011 and believes the carnival is a perfect way to start the Year of Culture.

She said: “There’ll be two parades. The lantern parade on foot has been designed by community artists who will lead the procession of community volunteers and then up to 20 colourful juggernaut floats, sponsored by local businesses, will be driving around the streets entertaining the crowds.”

Participants will be dressed up in outlandish costumes, dancing to music as the lanterns lead the way to the Guildhall for opening speeches and a performance by the oldest and arguably best boyband in the world -– the Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir.

Visitors will then be wowed with a spectacular firework display.

Amanda Davies, Wrexham Year of Culture organiser, said: “We hope that the Wrexham Year of Culture launch parade will bring a buzz to the borough of Wrexham.

“It will bring excitement and fun and start 2011 off with a bang.

“The Year of Culture will be bringing a raft of festivals, concerts, entertainment and comedy to Wrexham transforming it into the events hub of North Wales.”

2011 promises to be a big year for Wrexham as it hosts the National Eisteddfod, the carnival and more than 200 other cultural events, including festivals, concerts, ballet, opera, exhibitions and activities for all ages and interests.

And Wrexham Council expect it will attract thousands of extra visitors, boost businesses and provide people with the chance to enjoy some of the best cultural experiences in Wales.

The carnival is free and will take place on January 21 starting at 5.30pm, before moving to the Guildhall at 6.30pm followed by fireworks at 7pm.
