PENSIONERS were left shocked when a car ploughed into a brick wall in the icy conditions.

Thomas and Dianne Evans, of Westminster Drive, Rhosnesni, were watching television on Friday evening when they heard a loud bang.

“It was like a bomb going off,” said Thomas, 78.

“We ran out and the car was gone and the wall was demolished.”

About 20ft of the 30ft long, 6ft high garden wall, which is on the corner of Westminster Drive and Park Avenue, was knocked down.

Mr Evans said the driver later returned to the address to admit crashing into the wall because the road was so icy.

Now the couple, who have lived at the address for more than 30 years, are calling on the council to grit the road.

“It’s one of the major shortcuts and there is traffic coming along it all the time,” Mr Evans said.

He added that a bend in the road, which is on a hill, makes it even more dangerous and that cars are also parked on both sides.

“It’s just lucky nobody was walking on Park Avenue because a pillar and bricks from the wall fell onto the pavement.”

Mrs Evans said: “The road was like a sheet of ice and the driver put her foot on the brake and went straight into our wall.

“Luckily the driver wasn’t injured.

“It’s quite a busy road and people walk up and down it all the time.”

Following a complaint the road was gritted but it is not on the council’s main gritting route.

A spokeswoman from Wrexham council said: “We grit according to our Winter
Service Policy which is reviewed every year.”
