A MULTI-million pound project to revamp four Wrexham schools is due to get the green light.

The latest work to upgrade school buildings, totalling about £23 million, is expected to be approved by Wrexham Council on Tuesday.

Members of the authority’s executive board will be asked to endorse four separate projects to go forward to the Welsh Assembly Government for its approval and financial support as part of a 10-year rolling programme of improvements to schools in the borough.

The schools involved have all previously been reorganised on separate or single sites.

Schemes include the total rebuild of Hafod y Wern Community Primary School in Caia Park and a new junior block at Gwenfro Community Primary School in the same area.

Also in the programme are a new junior block and the refurbishment of the infant block at Gwersyllt Community Primary School and a new junior block at Penycae Community Primary School.

On top of the building projects the council will put forward a number of energy-saving projects to improve the carbon footprint of the borough’s school buildings.

If the executive board gives it the go-ahead the programme will be submitted to the Assembly Government by December 10, with a final decision from ministers expected by next spring.

The Assembly Government would provide 70 per cent of the funding with the council meeting the rest of the bill.

Council leader, Cllr Aled Roberts, said: “This is a very good submission based on hard evidence.”

Although the council has pledged to safeguard spending on schools, he added a cautionary note that the council’s request for funding to the Assembly Government must be seen against “the bleakest financial situation” in the decade since devolved government began.
