DEVOTED mother Angela Hulse is certain her son Gavin, who died in a tragic road accident in 2006, will be looking down on them when a £250,000 sports club extension is officially unveiled in Llangollen next week.

Gavin died following a car crash near Llangollen in December 2006. He was 21.

A memorial fund set up in tribute to Gavin raised £26,500 towards the total cost of the scheme.

In recognition of the huge contribution the donation has made to the project, the building will feature a plaque dedicated to Gavin’s memory.

Gavin’s parents - Angela and Keith from Trevor – will be at the ceremony to take part in the unveiling. Angela said it will be a day full of emotion but she knows that Gavin will be there every step of the way.

“He will be looking down on us. I feel that Gavin is with me all of the time and I think about him every day. He was absolutely lovely. He lived for football, it was his life. His favourite team was Blackburn Rovers,” said Angela.

The memorial fund raised cash through a wide range of activities and Angela thanked everyone who had contributed so generously.

In 2009 Angela was diagnosed with cancer on the day before the anniversary of Gavin’s death. She had previously fought cancer in 2003 and was told the grief and stress of losing Gavin may have been the cause for the disease returning.

“The doctors wanted to operate on me the very next day which would have been the anniversary. I refused and surgery went ahead the day after the anniversary instead.

“The first time I had chemotherapy at the Maelor Hospital the radio played Gavin’s favourite song by the band Snow Patrol. I knew he was there with me. The same thing happened when I needed a blood transfusion, the song came on the radio. I have since been given the all clear.”

Phil Jones, chairman of Llangollen Sports Club, thanked Angela and Keith for all their support, saying it was greatly appreciated.

The extension will include refurbishment to two changing rooms, four brand new changing rooms together with a kitchen and meeting room which can be used by community groups.

Mr Jones stressed that the club was grateful to all individuals and organisations who had contributed towards the cost of the scheme.

As well as cash donations many tradespeople had carried out work for free which brought the total value up to around the £250,000 mark. The official opening will take place on Thursday.
