A PRIMARY school has been given the go ahead for a £4.3 million improvement programme.

The approval, given to Park Primary School in Llay by Wrexham Council’s planning committee, includes the refurbishment of the existing junior school and the building of a new extension for infant and pre-school classes.

Safety and access improvements to School Road are also planned.

Su Evans, an architect with Wrexham Council, said: “We are working closely with the school to ensure that once work begins, the school will operate with minimum disruption.

“If everything goes according to schedule, works could start as soon as February next year on the car park.  Building work could start on the infants block in March.”

The project is expected to be completed by December 2012.

The majority of the funding for the improvements will come from the Welsh Assembly Government, with the remaining 20 per cent being financed by Wrexham Council.

Council leader Aled Roberts said the authority would “continue to work with the Welsh Assembly to secure further funding for other schools in Wrexham”.

He added: “Improving schools is one of our priority areas as we use every means available to provide our staff and pupils with schools and an environment that are fit for the 21st century.”
