Dean Saunders today revealed that Adrian Cieslewicz has been offered a contract extension until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old burst onto the scene after his arrival from Manchester City during the summer of 2009, producing a number of eye-catching pre-season performances against the likes of Championship outfit Preston North End.

However, he found regular first team action hard to come by during the 2009/10 campaign, making just 24 appearances, 14 of which were as a substitute, and the youngster failed to appear on the scoresheet.

The Polish under 19 international returned to Wrexham in the summer determined to extend his initial 18-month deal past January – when it was due to expire – and has enjoyed a change of fortune during six substitute appearances.

Cieslewicz scored his first goal for the club in the 3-0 win against Hayes and followed that up with a brace for the reserves against Bury – something that has not gone unnoticed by Saunders.

“I am going to give him a chance until the end of the season to see if he can win a contract for next season,” said Saunders. “He is a young player who has so many good things going for him but he has to improve his end product which recently he has been doing.

“He came on and made one and scored one for us at Hayes and Yeading. He scored two and made two in the reserves against Bury and he did well when he came on against AFC Wimbledon.

“He just needs to get a bit of self belief and he has to anticipate better. He is doing better and with the pace he has got there is something to work with. He drives me mad because if I was that quick – Curtis (Obeng) is the same – I would push the ball outside of people and run.

“Everybody bar those two see that but I keep on at them day after day and hopefully the penny drops, he (Cieslewicz) is showing progress and if that continues it is worth the time.”

Cieslewicz meanwhile believes that his hard work during those summer months is finally paying dividends having forced his way to the forefront of Saunders’ thoughts.

“I have done really well this season I think and the gaffer has praised me as well,” he said. “I have tried to work hard after training as well.

“I have stayed behind and done some extra sessions and I have improved from last season – if you improve then you get results.

“I worked over the summer back home with my dad, he has played football for 20 years so he was not going to let me just sit down. I came back and have worked hard to be ready.

“This season I have been able to make the bench and after two goals in the reserves recently I am flying and that is the main thing.”

Despite his delight at the offer of a new contract, the young attacker admits that there is still a lot of hard work to be done before he is the finished article.

“I was blessed with the pace but my end product isn’t there and I know that,” he admitted. “Pace is my attribute so I need to work on the other things now like my left foot and the final balls.

“The gaffer has tried to push me to be the best, young players can be lazy sometimes but there is no chance with him, he pushes you and said that if we don’t work hard we will be gone.

“He showed us where the gate is but you need to work hard otherwise there is not much going for you in football.”

And on the contract offer, Cieslewicz added: “We are talking about it.

“He has spoken to my dad and we have spoken about it. We need to sit down and sort it out.”

Cieslewicz will not be included in the Wrexham reserve team match with Burnley at Turf Moor this evening, (7pm), due to the hamstring injury that kept him out of the 1-1 draw at Histon on Saturday.

Saunders is likely hand those first team members not included in the draw at the weekend a chance to impress in what he sees as an important fixture.

“I see it as a big game against Burnley,” he added.

“It is a chance for the players to put a claim in for a place against Luton.”
