BT has hit back at claims Wrexham is lagging behind in the provision of high-speed broadband.

The charge comes from Coed y Glyn resident Peter Cowley who said: “It seems that Wrexham is at the back of the queue for the provision of high speed broadband.

“The town does not figure on BT's planned roll-out of fibre optic services for the foreseable future.”

BT is currently running a promotion to encourage people to vote for their BT Infinity service.

The five areas with the largest percentage of votes by December 31 will win the chance to bring superfast broadband to their area.

BT will also donate £5,000 of computer equipment to a local community project.
Mr Cowley added: “When I last checked, Wrexham had only registered 123 votes out of a possible 22,463 – hardly an enthusiastic vote to enter the 21st century.

“While it is frustrating that BT should make us compete in this rather childish way to get a better broadband service then let’s play them at their own game and register an interest.”

BT spokesman Chris Orum said: “Wrexham isn’t currently in the roll-out programme for superfast broadband, but the level of interest shown in Infinity will help BT when formulating it's ongoing roll-out strategy.

“This isn’t a childish competition but will provide BT with valuable information to establish where demand is greatest.

“Wrexham’s main exchange already has 21CN (21st Century Network) broadband and Wrexham north will be getting it by spring next year.

“This is copper-based but will provide speeds of up to 20Mb. This technology is available to all communications providers equally.”

BT customers can vote in the Infinity competition at www.racetoinfinity.bt.com and following the instructions.
