TWO supermarket giants have expressed an interest in one of Flintshire’s largest towns.

Sainsbury’s and Morrisons have now asked Buckley residents for ideas for possible locations as a masterplan to shape the future of the town gathers pace.

During a summit meeting held by Buckley councillor Ron Hampson, residents turned out at the town hall calling for a new supermarket and for a halt to housing developments in the area.

After the meeting Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant wrote to major supermarkets and retailers urging them to invest in the town centre.

He said Sainsbury’s and Morrisons had expressed an interest.

He said: “I am pleased with the response to date from major retailers. Buckley is one of the largest towns in North Wales and it makes perfect sense for retailers to invest in the town.”

Cllr Hampson said: “It is positive news that only a couple of weeks on from the Buckley summit that we are gaining interest from major retailers, I will continue to fight for more investment and facilities in our town.”

The first formal meeting to discuss a masterplan for Buckley has taken place between community leaders and consultants.

Regeneration and urban design specialists Urban Practitioners, the team behind the recently revealed plans for Connah’s Quay and Shotton, have been appointed to undertake the work, with a final plan expected in January.

The study is intended to help the town to become more vibrant and attractive to both local people and visitors.

It will look at opportunities for new commercial development, both retailing and offices, as well as investment in leisure and cultural facilities.

The masterplan project steering group includes officers from Flintshire Council, the county council, town councillors and representatives and Buckley’s town centre manager.

The public will be kept fully involved, with a number of consultation exercises planned, including an exhibition early in the New Year, together with questionnaires to help understand local views.
