COMEBACK king Mark Webster has shown plenty of bottle to secure his elusive first win in the Professional Darts Corporation.

The Denbigh darts ace joined the PDC back in February 2009, but after knocking on the door recently, that first tournament triumph came in Saturday’s German Darts Trophy Players’ Championship event at the Dolce Bad Nauheim.

It was a battle of two Welsh world champions in the final as 22nd seed Webster tackled a rejuvenated Richie Burnett.

Webster found himself behind in the final as 1995 BDO world champ Burnett led 3-1 and 4-2, only for Mark to reel off four straight legs to claim the title.

Comebacks were a feature of the day for the 2008 Lakeside World Professional champion.

Having defeated Aodhagan O’Neill (6-4), Wim Mink (6-3) and Denis Ovens (6-4) in the early stages, Mark came back from being 3-0 down to see off Vincent van der Voort 6-5 and reach the quarter-finals.

He repeated that scoreline against Dennis Smith in the last-eight and Webster also won his semi-final 6-5, after Germany’s Andree Welge led 5-3 but failed to close out victory.

Runner-up Richie Burnett did not have too long to wait to exact some revenge, though.

Sunday’s German Darts Trophy Players’ Championship contest saw Burnett and Webster pitted against each other for the third time in the space of seven days and this time it was the South Walian who prevailed with a 6-3 fourth round victory.

There was to be no happy ending for Burnett, however, as he suffered his second final loss in the space of 24 hours against the Wizard of Oz Simon Whitlock, who claimed his sixth PDC Pro Tour title of the year courtesy of a 6-4 scoreline.

Mark, who was seeded number 14 for the tournament, whitewashed Dieter Probach 6-0 in the first round and eased past Sladan Nedic 6-2 in the next stage.
Webster saw off Roland Scholten 6-4 in the third round.

A fine weekend’s work means that Webster has risen to a career-high 26th in the PDC order of merit, ahead of the most lucrative part of the darts year.

The next big event is the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts, which will again be held in Wolverhampton between November 13 and 21, while Webster is certain to be a part of the Welsh team at the PDC World Cup (December 3-5).

This is followed by the big one - the 2011 Labrokes.com World Professional Darts Championship to be staged in London from December 16 until January 3.
