RESIDENTS are to hold a public meeting over plans for a Welsh school in Gwersyllt.
An outline application for a new school and sports pitches has been submitted by the council for land at Alyn Waters Park, off Delamere Avenue.
Residents of Delamere Avenue, who are concerned about the plans, will hold the public meeting on Monday.
David Jones said: “We invite anyone who has thoughts on the proposed development to come to the meeting to discuss the plans.
“We want to find what the true feeling is about the school being built here.
“Anyone is welcome to come along whether they agree or disagree with the plans – people are entitled to their views.”
The meeting will be held at the Park Sports Association in Bradley at 7.30pm.
Cllr Ted George, of Gwersyllt East and South, said: “I welcome the meeting – we need to get the public involved with the community.
“I was a councillor with Clwyd when Ysgol Plas Coch was built for children this side of Wrexham.
“This is within a mile of that school – do they need another school down the road in the same area?
“I’m concerned about the environmental impact and traffic.”
Mr Jones added: “We’re not against Welsh medium, we are concerned about a school being built on green open space.
“We feel that there might be a better site for a school on brownfield land adjacent to Ysgol Bryn Alyn.”
Wrexham Council says a survey in 2007 identified a large number of families in Gwersyllt, Llay and Summerhill who wanted to send their children to a Welsh medium school. In response, temporary classrooms were placed at Ysgol Plas Coch in Wrexham.
The plans are available to view online by the application number P/2010/0881.
