A FUNDRAISING event to enable a little boy with leukaemia to go on a dream holiday has been declared a huge success.

A fancy dress event at Brymbo Sports and Social Club raised more than £4,000 - some of which will go towards funding the holiday to Disney World, Florida for Leighton Rhys Jones.

The money raised on the night will also be split between Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, a cancer charity called Nicola’s fund and the Ronald McDonald House.

Four-year-old Leighton, of Hall Street, Rhos, was diagnosed with leukaemia in February and has had intensive chemotherapy for six months.

He is now in remission but must stay on what is known as “maintenance” treatment until 2013.

Until then the youngster, who goes to Ysgol Hooson, cannot get on a plane because his immune system would be too weak to cope with any viruses picked up.

Leighton’s mother, Jenene, said: “The night was a great success and the amount raised was absolutely amazing.

“It was an emotional night to see so many people there, truly amazing and wonderful and I can’t thank everyone enough for all their support.”

Speaking about Leighton’s illness, she said: “I will never forget the day we were told that Leighton had leukaemia.

“It was devastating news that you always think happens to other people.

“I will never forget how I felt when we were delivered the news which turned my life upside down and broke my heart into millions of pieces but it is totally amazing how a community comes together and supports you in such difficult times.”

She added: “Leighton is doing well and is such a brave little boy – my shining star.

“He doesn’t understand everything that is happening, or all the lovely things people are doing for him, so I am making a scrapbook of these times to show him when he is older that despite all the treatment and illness he was still a happy little boy and that he was thought of by so many people.”

Jenene wanted to thank Sharon and Mark Baker, Steve Walters, Rebecca and Gap Recruitment, Simon Roberts, Gareth and Brymbo Cricket Club, Koo Ka Choo and everyone who came on the night.

She added a thank you to The Cross Foxes in Penycae for organising a prize draw which raised £108 and also to The Black Lion in Rhos which also organises a prize draw to raise money.
