VANDALS have targeted a Wrexham charity which has already suffered five break-ins in the last year.

The people behind the Millennium Eco Centre, an environmental education facility off Holt Road, have now raised fears over its survival if it continues to be targeted.

The registered charity, which is run by St Christopher’s School in Wrexham, has suffered a series of break-ins in which cash and equipment have been stolen.

The latest incident came over the weekend when the large sign at the main entrance had a large section cut out.

Teacher Matt Lewis, who helps run the centre, said: “The banner sign at the front gates on Holt Road had on it a large picture of a Spitfire fighter plane, representing the site’s RAF heritage.

“Somebody had taken a sharp knife and cut out the whole section containing the plane.

“It cannot possibly be of use to anyone else, this is just sheer wanton vandalism.

“Over the past 12 months we have had five break-ins at the site.

“Last May we had almost £1,000 in cash stolen from the safe and last November somebody got into the storage shed and stole £2,000 worth of gardening tools, including two petrol-powered lawnmowers and a hedge strimmer

“It’s almost like someone has a vendetta against us. Every time we take one step forward we are being pushed two steps back.”

He added: “We are a registered charity and rely on donations and the small amount of money we get in from the cafe to survive.

“There is no way we can keep on making up these losses and I don’t know how many more times we can go through this sort of thing.

“The banner is so badly damaged it really needs replacing but we certainly can’t afford to do that.

“We’re still trying to cope without all the tools we lost last November. If anyone would like to donate any garden tools we would be grateful.”

North Wales Police confirmed an incident of criminal damage at the centre had been reported to them.

A spokesman said: “We are appealing for anyone who knows anything about this or saw anything suspicious around the centre over the weekend to call us on 101.”
