A FUNDRAISING event to help a little boy with leukaemia have his dream holiday to Disney World in Florida will take place tonight.

Leighton Rhys Jones, four, was diagnosed with the illness in February this year and because of his weak immune system will not be able to go on an aeroplane until his treatment finishes in February 2013.

It is after this that Leighton’s family, from Rhos, hope he will be able to have his dream holiday to Florida.

All money raised at the charity event at Brymbo Sports and Social Complex tonight will be split between Leighton’s fund and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital where he regularly attends for checks and treatment.

So far more than 300 tickets have been sold and top prizes up for auction including a signed St Helens rugby shirt, a signed Crusaders rugby shirt and football shirts from Liverpool, Chelsea, Derby and Wolves.

There is also a boxing glove signed by Nathan Cleverly and a snooker cue signed by top players including Ronnie O’Sullivan.

There will also be a raffle and a band sponsored by Gap Recruitment of Wrexham called Koo Ka Choo.

Leighton’s mum, Jenene, 37, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response and we’re hoping the auction will go down well. It should be a really good night.”

Speaking about Leighton’s condition, Jenene said: “We went to the clinic yesterday and they’re quite happy with his progress. He’s going to school part-time at the moment. I think he’s really enjoying it.”

Leighton, who lives with his mum, dad and little sister Tia-Lily, 15 months, was diagnosed with leukaemia in February and has had intensive chemotherapy for six months.

He is now in remission but must stay on what is known as ‘maintenance’
treatment until 2013.

Thousands of pounds have been raised for Leighton and for Alder Hey Hospital including £830 raised by Jenene’s dad Frank Bithell at an Air Products cabaret and £2,000 from a charity fancy dress football match by Penycae under-sevens.

Tickets for tonight’s event cost £6 and can be bought on the door.
